Driven. For Security.
Advances in digital technology are creating new opportunities for biopharma organizations to innovate and improve their operations, but as technology evolves and becomes more ingrained in our day to day so do the prevalence of security risks.
With cyberattacks becoming increasingly more complex and frequent, Samsung Biologics has continued to prioritize and develop ways to enhance and modernize its information security capacity and cultivate employee awareness. Shin Su-yeon of the Information Security Assurance (ISA) group at Samsung Biologics discusses how the world’s largest CDMO maintains a highly advanced information security infrastructure.
How has the COVID-19 pandemic amplified cyber security threats?
Cyber security incidents occur more frequently as many organizations have begun to digitalize their processes. Since the pandemic, the biopharma industry in particular has suffered a rising number of cyberattacks. We have installed the highest-level security infrastructure in our plants to proactively prevent information security leakages as we provide a CDMO service based on our clients classified technologies.
How does Samsung Biologics protect its clients’ information?
Security leaks of core technologies have taken a considerable toll on the biopharma industry. That is why clients scrutinize the reliability of our security system before deciding to partner with us. As information security directly affects corporate credibility, we have continued to enhance our cyber security work environment based on three pillars: external attack preemption, information leakage prevention and security solution enhancement.
Our Songdo plants are built with a tight-knit security infrastructure, consisting of firewall, a malicious code preemption system, encryption, and in-and-out security system — all of which have contributed to deterring hackers from infiltrating into our internal servers.
How does Samsung Biologics strengthen its security infrastructure?
We are in the middle of the digital transformation while maintaining a highly secure infrastructure with the help of our rigorous regulations and information protection system. Our security infrastructure in 2019 has earned the International Organization for Standardization’s Information Protection Certification (ISO27001) for the first time as a global biomedicine CMO. We have also recently galvanized our efforts in improving our cloud-based IT security system responsible for operating a contactless plant inspection and the Live Virtual Tour (LVT) room.
How does your team help raise awareness of the importance of cyber security? Are there any specific examples of how you cultivate a security-conscious culture among employees?
Although our security technologies and systems get regularly updated and enhanced, it’s virtually impossible for an organization to be completely immune to cyberattacks and security incidents. I believe employees need to partake in various trainings designed to help them be more cautious of cyberattacks and information security.
We at Samsung Biologics have been working to establish a “security-conscious” culture in which employees can learn about cyber security in an organic environment. We conduct a monthly malicious email simulation exercise as part of our continued efforts to help employees be more vigilant to malicious emails and the importance of cyber security. We also run the Cyber Guardians, an employee-led organization that solicits security-related grievances to better our cyber security work environment.
Furthermore, we work to strengthen the cyber security capacity of our partners by providing them resources and seminars about cyber security. Samsung Biologics is committed to improving its information security infrastructure to assure our clients’ technologies remain safeguarded.
Samsung Biologics celebrates the unique qualities, perspectives, and experiences that define us as individuals. Whether you're a hard-worker, smart thinker, dreamer or doer, we share one goal at Samsung Biologics: we are all driven for life. In this spotlight series, learn more about our diverse colleagues and the life-changing work they do.
